AI synthetic Touhou fan-art: Youmu and Sanae standing against Tojiko, Futo, and Futo in Touhou 13 ~ Ten Desires - Tool: ChatGPT plus

Lately, I’ve been busy with my main job and have no air conditioning in my room, making it hard to focus on creative work due to my primary research duties. Today, I scanned a rough sketch and finished it using a mix of AI tools. I also made this as an example of creating free AI art with ChatGPT.

The prompt grew iteratively. Each unsuccessful generation revealed another ambiguity, so I kept adding more precise constraints until the result came close to the composition in my mind. In that sense, the final prompt is almost an archaeological record of my negotiations with the model.

The image is not only my idealised vision of Touhou Project, but also my own philosophical allegory. The three figures above represent hereditary, ritualised authority and the power of tradition. Sanae, as a modern progressive arriving from the twenty-first century, and Youmu, imagined as a solitary and disciplined swordswoman, confront them from below. Together, the two heroines represent different aspects of the player—essentially, different aspects of myself.

The input prompts are as follows:

The idea of Japan joining the EU, why not.

"Japan will join the EU!", I would like to shout on the 1st April.

Added on 31st March 2026

There is a possibility that the great circle distance of the sea route between the European Union (EU) and Japan will be significantly shortened under this global warming. The new arctic sea route is emerging due to the ice meltdown. Although there are still various challenges to explore this route, it is demanded all the more than before now.

The recent Middle Eastern incidence and the unstable political situation in South Asia may alert Japan and Europe to explore the alternative trade route. North American countries are focusing on the possibly high market potential in this Arctic route. On the top of the trade route between the EU and Japan, this area is essential for shipping the natural energy resources such as petrol oil and natural gas in this region. It is the common geopolitical interest for both the EU and Japan to secure the exploration of this trade route is necessary rather than expectation nowadays.

Furthermore, we must not forget that the legal code of Japan has been based on the legal positivism of the continental Europe since the 19th century! The legal code of Japan is one of the examples backing up the proverb saying "All roads lead to Rome". Yes, the continental European legal code is originated from that of the Roman law.

Japan also kept the exclusive trade tie with the Netherlands from the 17th to the 19th century. When Americans landed on Japan in the 19th century, Dutch was used as the intermediary language between American and Japanese individuals at their first encounters.  It might sound plausible Japan could closer to the EU than the USA in terms of this regard especially since the first arrival of Jesuits in the 17th century,

Added on 1st April 2026

Of course, I know there are non-negligible drawbacks in this case scenario. First of all, the EU is heavily bureaucratic which frustrates individual habitants in their daily life as well as their economic and scientific activities. Secondly, their macroeconomic policy still faces the challenge which even the first governor of the European Central Bank (ECB) has pointed out. They have not fixed the problem of the fiscal policy under the European common monetary (EMU) policy while the characteristics of fiscal policy agents in the member states are still not harmonised enough. The aforementioned heavy frustrating bureaucracy tends to keep this kind of required reforms being slower than expected.

Originally written on 4-5th February 2023

The followings are considered to be the conditions to join the European Union (EU) or any other possible economic and political union of countries/states.

- Microeconomics:
  1. The high cross border trade (export and import) frequency
  2. The labour and capital mobility across the border

- Macroeconomics:
  3. The synchronised business cycle (boom and recession) among the member states
  4. The balanced fiscal policy neither disrupting the fiscal and monetary policy conducts nor depreciating the economic credibility of the entire union.

- The other aspects:
  5. Cultural and historic tie among the member states
  6. Geopolitical diplomatic interest

Japan fulfils these conditions except for the forth one because of the massive national debt of Japan. The second and third conditions might be questionable but they are not insignificant at all.

Remember that the foreign tourism is accounted as export&import!  The EU members and Japan trade not only physical items but also tourists a lot with each other.

Also remember that Japan had had the international trade with Europeans more than the others since 17th century till the end of Shogunate era! In particular, during Tokugawa dynasty, lasting for approximately 300 years, the Netherlands was only the country which was permitted to trade with Japan implementing the national isolation. Before then, Spanish and Portuguese were the major diplomatic partners until they were banned from it.

Both the EU and Japan very often share the remarkable foreign diplomatic and geopolitical interest. For example, both frequently suffer from Russian aggressions and the geopolitical interests of containing Russia. Both the EU and Japan are required to maintain their sea-lane for both economic and political stabilities so that they had better share their sea-lane and its security.

Thus, I have actually posted on a social network page of European Federalist to request Japan to join the EU to fill the membership position of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (UK).

PS. This is just a simulation which is not feasible in real so that please do not take this issue seriously.

250th Anniversary of the publication of Wealth of Nations by Adam Smith!

Congratulations! Because of Adam Smith, I started knowing Scotland and got interested in economics as well as the modern philosophy including the enlightenment philosophy of his senior fellow David Hume!

Adam Smith is my hero who has attracted me to Scotland...! Since I read his Wealth of Nations, I have become so passionate about Scotland that I decided to study in Scotland! The individual property right is a fundamental of the economic liberalism! The big government undermining the general will of individuals eventually diverts our economy from the natural economic equilibrium which is the most feasible condition, and then misguides to the state of economic disturbance...! I really praise Adam Smith's theory which always points out what is right for economy when our economic freedom and general will are invaded by any sort of oppressors at any time period of our history...!

Rise in Donald Trump = Jacksonian revolt

There is a political spectrum which cannot be simply represented by the political party affiliation. The US political ideological spectrum is more complex and interesting than what many people nowadays tend to assume. The characteristics of the US Democrats and the US Republicans are quite diverse and have been changing over time. In particular, the emerging of Mr. Donald Trump and his charisma as a political leader can be much more precisely explained by means of the longer historical perspective than the mere conflict within the two party system .

As explained in my essay America and her base ideological principles (https://art-blue-liberalism.blogspot.com/search/label/America%20and%20her%20base%20ideological%20principles), the US political ideological segmentation has been based on these 4 groups since her establishment period. Even before Woodrow Wilson became a US president, there were already presidents who should be labelled as Wilsonian such as Abraham Lincoln (at least in my analysis).

I would like to introduce some of the typical examples expressing the reason why the party affiliation is often irrelevant to understanding about each individual political position in terms of the historical scale.

Until Woodrow Wilson came into the power, the US Democrats contain the members with the two extremes: The idealist federalists putting emphasis on spreading the liberal-democratic ideal over the world and the provision of social welfare conducted by the strong centralised government. The isolationists claiming for individuals' sovereign right including not only citizens but also each individual state while the federal government is kept necessary minimum. After the purge of the latter by Wilson's administration, Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR) had completely shaped the intense federalist characteristic of the US Democratic party. The former group is the typical personality of the current Democratic party whilst the latter used to hold much majority in the old days.

The Republican party was initially established as the offspring of the old federalist party meanwhile the Democratic party used to be more sceptical about the federalism in the past. The Republican party has produced two kinds of federalists: The first US president Lincoln was indeed an idealistic federalist like the current mainstream US Democrats. The realists claiming for the federal power for securing the global trade route with the military protection and the unified market system fulfilling the US national interest were the US Republican mainstream in the 20th century.

In the whole 20th century and the earlier 21st century, the mainstream politics has been occupied by the federalists regardless of which one of the two political parties being in charge of the government. The isolationists have been undermined under the intense federalism. Nevertheless, since the early 21st century, the gradual emergence of the isolationists revolting against the federalist status-quo has already been seen in the US political history. The intra-party conflict of the US republicans between the mainstream federalist faction and the anti-federalist libertarian-leaning faction lead by Mr. Ron Paul was well-recognised in the presidential 2012. Also, the most remarkable US third political party Libertarian has been spotlighted since this time period.

The intra-political conflict between the federalists and the isolationists is then no longer unusual especially inside the Republican party since then. The presentation by Mr Donald Trump is much more blunt but yet much easier for the grass-roots to understand than the counterpart by Mr Ron Paul. Also, Trump's advertisement of the national interest with simple aggressive statements tends to attract wider audiences than Paul's rationale but complex idealistic taste. The identical characteristic of these two political segments is the scepticism against the global intervention of the USA with her intensively strong federal government authority.

The significant difference of Trump's isolationism from the isolationism of Libertarianism is the difference between realism and idealism. The strong Libertarians put immense emphasis on the end of the already excessively expanded federal autocracy as well as responsibility over the global politics. By contrast, Trump administration still uses the federal authority and some intervention to the foreign affairs for securing the national interest of the USA as the realistic necessity. For the time being, Trump's political manifesto seems to be balancing between the powerful political mainstream elites and the silent majority.

Going to back to the original title of this article, it does not seem to be quite feasible to refer Trump as Jacksonian. At the same time, by means of the political implementation relative to the current world situation where the US federal authority is big as much, it should be quite reasonable to call Trump as Jacksonian. Andrew Jackson himself was more drastically anti-federalist decentralist than the majority Jeffersonian unlike Donald Trump. But yet, the populism of Trump where the silent majority claim for more decentralisation than what the status-quo offers is resemblance to the contemporary Jackson's administration.

As shown in my US political spectrum chart, the keyword connecting Jackson and Trump is the populism. Trump won the presidential victory due to the supports of the majority population being tired of the intense globalist federalist regime. Description of Trump as Jacksonian can be by means of the relative term more than absolute. However, the rise of Trumpism indeed reveals the fatigue of the USA being the global leader, and then it seems to be inevitable to see the rise of the isolationist cohorts in the US political history.

This realistic isolationist revolt seems to emerge as the counterweight against the overweight on the globalist federalism of the 20th century and the earlier 21st century. In the past when the government status-quo focused on the isolationism prioritising the internal development over the trade and diplomatic interventionism (globalism), the silent majority aspired for the globalism. Furthermore, when one individual state is incapable to protect citizens' individual liberty and right, these citizens expected for the federal intervention. All in all, there tends to be a conflict between the political ideological segments whenever there is an imbalance of the power.

On the other hand, there is still a strong demand for the federal authority and its expansionist intervention by not only the globalist cohorts inside the USA but also the world outside the USA. The realist expansionists such as corporate elites, the high-tech engineers, and those embracing their service provision require the federal government providing the moderation of business and legal matters and the military force and the law enforcement securing their safe trade routes.  The idealist expansionists expect for the US federal government and as the guardian of the liberal democracy in both domestic and foreign affairs through the welfare provision, the diplomatic relations, and the military force if necessary and effective.

The expansionism lead by the federalism is beneficial for promoting individuals' liberty and right through their free market under the unified economic and legal system as well as the guardianship of liberal democracy promoting the world piece and freedom. Overall, all these  4 political interest group aspire for their objective of accomplishing the well-being of the nation in their own unique way. It is just a matter of the frustration of one over the others when one of the major 4 political interest groups is marginalised.

Considering the conflict of these political interests, a rise in Trump's popularity is not an unusual phenomenon in the US history. This phenomenon represents the polarisation of the nation, and it is natural for the US democracy.  Hence, Trump represents one of the 4 political segments to revolt against the others.

Manifesto Fictosexualism!

I would like to declare for the manifesto insisting on the rise and the full right of Fictosexualism!

This is one of the glorious cause of supporting Progressive Libertarianism /  Classical Liberalism!

I follow the ethics of my admirable philosopher Jeremy Bentham saying "The greatest sum of pleasures with the lowest sum of pains is the principle of moral and legislation." Nobody harms and an individual gains the happiness from being fictosexual!

I sincerely despise the staunch Christians, feminists, and the staunch structuralists, persecuting my personality trait!

Redit: Japanese political compass 2024

This is still very rough and a wee bit inaccurate. Yet, it depicts the rough idea of the distribution of these political parties. According to it, I am the very centrist in Japan as I have a highest number of match with the manifesto of 国民民主党 (National Democratic party). Maybe NHK党 (The party for abolition of the national TV Broadcasting station) too, but found not practical enough to be a mainstream political party. I have to disagree with 公明党 (Komei party) as it is likely to be against the separation of religion and politics stated in the constitution although I have a compatibility with their moderately liberalist stance. .... I have to say that the position of 日本維新の会 (The party of Ishin) should be economically far right wing and socially more authoritarian; just slightly more liberal than the 自民党 (LDP).

The quote from Milton Friendman about how the market economy can serve for good in politics

This is why I still strongly support the market economy (some call Capitalism) for not only political economics but also ethical reasoning! This is a spontaneous order inducing individuals' interests even with their evil intension trading off to providing needs and wants of the others! This is why I strongly support individuals' property right as their reward of fulfilling their motivation to survive as well as serving good for the public!!

Even comparing the authoritarian countries, those with the proper market economy, i.e. freer economy, seem to have a higher degree of social freedom than the other counterparts. Those political and socially free countries which have introduced a more collective form, i.e. less freer economy, tend to lose their overall freedom. We also have to be warned of the corporatism, the new form of totalitarianism, where a market is monopolised by few hands of corporate elites.

Mr Ronald Reagan and Mr Donald Trump: Donald Trump dodged the assassination bullet to survive.

Mr Donald Trump dodged the bullet to survive! A man with such a luck! Aye, this image copied from the web may be something plausible to explain why he could dodge and survive in such a situation. All the presidents in the history except for Mr Ronald Reagan could not dodge the assassination. "The history has chosen him to survive!" This must be the historical turning point ending the lasting regime having thrived since the beginning of the 20th century.

Aye, this may be something plausible to explain why both Mr Ronald Reagan and Mr Donald Trump could dodge and survive in such a situation. All the presidents in the history except could not dodge the assassination. "The history has chosen him to survive!"  These historical moments must be the necessary historical turning point.

Soren Kierkegaard

(Originally published on 26 May 2017)
Soren Kierkegaard: My favourite existentialist philosopher. Although I disagree with majority of existentialists generally speaking, I strongly agree with and am sympathetic to Soren Kierkegaard.

He explicitly criticised schools of the modern idealism and their influences in the modern world. The disease of modernity is a blunt dogmatic determinism without an emotional passion. Also, he mentioned that the modern idealism merely attracts people with their abstract principle which is extremely complex to explicitly explain in a plain language. These modern idealists including both fascists and socialists over-estimate the future while depreciating the simple happinesses in both the past and the pressent.

Either/Or is our ever lasting challenge in our life and makes us strong, passionate, and then wise. (The following sentences were added on 09 May 2024) We are living with our best effort to live off our life. Every choice of our life is derived from our optimum decision making process as well as the inevitable external influences. Therefore, even with a rational way of explaining which choice is right or wrong, there is utterly unproductive and miserable to regret what has been chosen to do. We may just need to repent our choice in our life to make ourselves more emotionally and spiritually satisfied with it.

The mysterious Japanese macroeconomic factor: The national debt per GDP is 251.93%!

... well, Japanese national debt percentage of GDP is over 200%! This is one of the mysterious Japanese macroeconomic factors.
One of the reason is that approximately 90% or more of Japanese national bond holders are Japanese nationals. This is why the government can keep these bond holders even with a substantially low interest rate. The hidden cost of this policy is incurred upon Japanese economy because the government is hardly able to raise the interest rate even during the inflationary period.

Furthermore, the value of Japanese national bond is so stable that the capital loss risk is low. Because there is still a regular coupon payment (the income gain) with the low capital loss risk at the moment, the majority private banks in Japan keep holding the national bond as the secure asset. The majority Japanese citizens are so risk-averse that they hardly split their saving to private investment: Then, the private bank simply shift their saving account money to the national bond purchase. Although the coupon payment is not so high, the risk premium is still lower than any private bond for the moment. Their risk-averse personality is one of the strong drive of stabilising the national bond price.
Nevertheless, it is sceptical to assume this mechanism can keep going on. Japanese economy has been stagnated for multiple decades since the last economic bubble burst in 1990s. Nowadays, Japanese economic indices show that Japanese economic strength is even weaker than before. In addition, the entire macroeconomic strength will keep going down due to the ongoing ageing population combined with the constant substantial population decline.

Megumu Iizunamaru (Utilitarian) VS Byakuren Hijiri (Deontologist): 東方利維坦~Leviathan~

Why I have decided to write it and illustrated this image of these characters from Touhou Project

There was an opinion poll to decide which character could be our ideal chief / manager / commander in Touhou Project. I personally thought Megumu Iizunamaru, the chief of the Tengu clan, would be the best in the poll. However, she did not take the first place in this particular opinion poll. At the same time, the result was still agreeable because Byakuren Hijiri, the chief of Myourenji temple, took the first place.

Both Iizunamaru and Hijiri have an ideal quality as a leader of an organisation. It should not be the case that either one surpasses the other for their leadership quality. It is not the issue of the quality; It is the issue of their characteristics to distinguish their suitability of being an ideal leader of one organisation!

Their characteristics of business management and political philosophy can be clearly explained by means of the two major philosophical theories of ethics and social justice: Utilitarianism, invented by Jeremy Bentham, and Deontology, mostly notably the philosophy of Immanuel Kant.

The former values the actions bringing the greatest happiness/welfare/profit in consequence. The latter values the action depending on the moral evaluation of the nature of the actions regardless of the consequence. Amazingly, it is quite obvious to be able to explain that Iizunamaru follows Utilitarian whereas Hijiri follows Deontology according to their scripts in both the original Touhou project (*1) series and various fan-arts of them.

This dichotomous comparison of these two ethical principles is discussed in various realms in the world. Justice with Michael Sandel lecturing about social justice and its ethical principle in the University of Harvard can be the most remarkable stage of this discussion. Yuval Noah Harari, having published "Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind" has predicted this topic will be an essential matter for setting the thought processes of the artificial intelligence (AI). It is hotly discussed in not only politics and sociology but also management and our daily-life ethics.

This is a really wonderful coincidence that the action principle of Iizunamaru and Hijiri follows either of the ethical principles. It enables to introduce these social justice theories with the examples with these images of Touhou project with fun. I have also enjoyed illustrating these images of Megumu Iizunamaru and Byakuren Hijiri for this article (*2).

What is "東方利維坦~Leviathan~"

This blog title is also my own Fanzine title based on this battle of these excellent chiefs I am thinking of to publish if realisable. Leviathan is the tittle of the book published by Thomas Hobbes, the British philosopher in the 17th century. It introduces the historical evolution and the philosophical principle of law and order. Leviathan is originally a humongous mythological monster, and this book refers to this monster as a metaphor of organising a civic nation and the other massive organisations. It also explains about the necessary existence of one sovereign with rational authority sustaining the organisational structure as well as the entire social order.

Iizunamaru belongs to the largest organisation in Gensokyou (the Touhou world) and takes part of a major role for leading her Crow Tengu clan. Youkai mountain is composed of various Youkai clans functioning to sustain their civic social order and technological progress as tough it were one major corporation oligarchy. She works on behalf of the interest of this humongous organisation equivalent to Leviathan state.

Hijiri, the chief nun magician of Myourenji temple, manages a relatively smaller group than Iizunamaru whilst she aspires for establishing one immense civic social order uniting human and Youkai (*3). This is a deviant ideal which the majority of Touhou characters of both attributions. At the same time, she has a plan and the talent of establishing such a state with a size of Leviathan although her ideal is different from Hobbesian autocratic sovereign state.

In this Fanzine, if realised, I would like to write a story of Iizunamaru and Hijiri. Iizunamaru and Youkai mountain representing the status-quo of the current Leviathan state. Hijiri and her fellows rebel against it with their ideal holding out for alternative organisational structure. This article introduces the background of this anticipated plan hoping to make it able to understand this major topic in philosophy, politics, sociology, and then the AI development.

*3 Youkai generally a Japanese mystical creature whereas Touhou project uses this term as non-human attribute.

Byakuren Hijiri & Immanuel Kant: Deontologist

Kantian philosophy claims for a fundamental criterion like mathematical axiom enabling logics of ethics to objectively self-evaluates its validity itself.  This criterion justifies the nature of actions and thought-processes rather than their consequence. They are categorically verified if they follow this criterion. Otherwise, they are classified as hypothetical. These actions are motivated by the ethical duty determining absoluteness of right and wrong so that this is why it is called Deontology.

Kant was also remarkable for initiating the idea of establishing the united nation under a principle of human-right.  In order to seek the happiness of all, the world has to be united under this principle eventually. Even though the separation and the conflicts among nations and tribes have been inevitable, all the people are ought to maintain their ethical universal principle to converge to such a state.

Hijiri's philosophy is identical to Kantian. She treats both human and Youkai equally and keep aspiring to establish a unification of tribes of both human and all attributes of Youkai in Gensokyou. Nevertheless, her ideal is indeed deviant in the world of Gensokyou where the segregation among a human commune and the tribes of Youkai is considered as inevitably necessary. Reimu Hakurei, the protagonist of Touhou project series who is in charge of moderating the entire law and order of Gensokyou, even support the segregation policy between human and Youkai.

The ethics of both Kant and Hijiri has a critical drawback which is the lack of tolerance. In terms of Gensokyou history, Hijiri has revealed her intolerance towards the protagonist. Hijiri started assaulting them because they insist on defeating Youkai in their duty to solve the incidence caused by Youkai at the first encounter. Furthermore, Hijiri imposes strict precepts on not only herself but also all her fellows in Myourenji temple in their daily life. Therefore, their degree of freedom in their actions and thoughts are morally restrained.

Megumu Iizunamaru & Jeremy Bentham: Utilitarian

Benthamite philosophy claims for the greatest sum of pleasures and the lowest sum of pains as the principle of moral and legislation. This concept is the cost and benefit analysis for the ethical justification. Bentham attempted to quantify the outcomes brought by legal settings and individuals' actions to make their costs and benefits mathematically measurable. Therefore, he aspired to establish an fundamental axiom for justifying law and ethics for mathematical estimation of equitable judgement and future outcomes.

Bentham was sceptical about the customary law relying on the past examples and tradition plus the unquantifiable emotions and morality.  Benthamite ethics tolerates various customs and actions as long as they bring a greatest pleasure and profit with the lowest possible cost and pain while not unnecessarily harming the others. Together with its focus on the future outcome rather than the past tradition, this ethics encouraging innovations of adopting new ideas and technologies as well as a high degree of freedom of actions and thoughts.

Iizunamaru's philosophy is identical to Benthamite. She is eager to adopt new ideas and technologies encouraging the development and the welfare of her clan and the entire Youkai mountain.  Her role covers not only managing her own Tengu clan members but also collaborating with the subsidiary inside Youkai mountain such as Kappa and their factory. She has also initiated a new product distribution in a market of the spell card by taking a high risk. Despite her very high demand for various tasks, she treats her subordinates and stakeholders well enough to gain a high charisma of being loved and trusted by them.

The problem of their philosophy is the negligence of something unquantifiable and the risk of unpredicted costs incurred upon their action. Iizunamaru has plotted the market manipulation by distributing the extra spell cards by colluding with Chimata Tenkyu. The spell card rule is something sacred which should not be easily manipulated in Gensokyou. This is why it was cracked down by Reimu of Hakurei shrine. For the sake of maximising profit for herself as well as her fellows, she sometimes commit dirty or risky business which tend to be criticised by the traditional moral sense. This is the typical drawback of Utilitarianism regarding highly of the end justifying the mean in general.

Brief Conclusion

This analogy of ethics in social justice with Touhou characters may help more people to understand in an explicit way. This topic is widely discussed in various fields in academia and our daily life. Also, studying about this subject may make people enjoy the entertainment of Touhou project. The next challenge will transform this topic to more entertaining media such as comic or video.  I personally have to investigate how to do so and make my own effort to realise it somehow.

The European Monetary Union is inevitable, but has to be fundamentally revised

Published on 23/07/2011 09:18 British Summer Time

1. Introduction

This Eurozone crisis has been predicted by many economists. These economists put emphasis on the impact of the money supply volume on the stability of economic environments such as the price inflation rate, the unemployment rate, the gross domestic product (GDP), and the speculative trend on financial market. They argued that, when the monetary policy is unified, the common fiscal policy is also required to be established, all the member countries of this monetary union are supposed to have the financial regulation for all these countries, and the labour mobility needs to be flexible for workers in these member countries to move across these countries in order to stabilise the economic environments. In addition, the econometric analysis of the Eurozone average inflation rate indicated that the European Monetary Union (EMU) is beneficial to majority of the member countries owning to the harmonised inflation rate, but it still requires something to control the different inflation rate of each individual member country. The reason of German refusal of issuing Eurobond is assumed to be because of uncooperative attitudes of Greece. Mr. Trichet, the governor of the European Central Bank (ECB) also suggests that the EMU has to fundamentally change its overall structure before allowing any countries to keep incurring their debt. Overall, the solution of the currently ongoing Eurozone crisis is the fundamental improvement on the EMU fiscal, financial, and labour market structure, and getting rid of the common currency will never be a solution.

2. The problem caused by the monetary policy transformation

The disadvantage of abandoning the national monetary policy (to join the common monetary union) is that this country becomes no longer able to set her own interest rate and the volume of her own money supply. Greece used to be heavily relying on her own unique monetary policy, based on the money supply which was remarkably higher than the average of European countries, in order to finance her government expenditure which could not be sufficiently financed by her unsophisticated fiscal policy. However, after Greece joined the EMU, she could no longer use her high money supply. Greece may rely on the tax revenue burdened on her export revenue such as her tourist industry and the growth of her private sectors stimulated by the economic growth of the entire Eurozone economy. Nonetheless, unless she tightens her fiscal policy, when the entire Eurozone economy falls into recession and/or the demand of Greek tourist industry declines, Greece starts struggling to obtain her public finance resource. This problem has been seen in many Southern European Nations such as Italy, Spain, and Portugal. But, Greece seems to be more problematic than these Southern nations. Spanish government shows a strong commitment on tightening Spanish fiscal policy under the European central government’s induction. Italy still has her strong initiative in European economy thanks to her famous industries such as finance, manufacturing, and tourism. Portugal seems to be similar to Greece, but the quantitative data analysis shown in the next chapter indicates Portuguese suffers much less than Greece.

3. The econometric analysis of the Eurozone average inflation rate

This graph (Qualitative method) above shows the different inflation of the Eurozone countries (IMF, 2011). Majority of the Eurozone countries have a synchronised inflation rate trend from 2002 to 2010. The econometric analysis of the Eurozone average inflation rate, whose results are shown by the following figures, indicated that the price inflation of the individual countries joining the European Monetary Union (EMU) is influenced by the price inflation of the other different EMU countries.

This equation is the inflation rate of all individual Eurozone countries (〖Inflation〗_(i,t)) regressed on the inflation rate in the last year 〖Inflation〗_(i,t-1). As the coefficient of 〖Inflation〗_(i,t-1) is less than 1, this variable is stable enough to converge into a particular point in the long run as follows:

So, this proves that the Eurozone inflation rate is converging into 2% which is what the ECB targets to make! The following regression analysis proves that the GDP grows furthermore when the inflation rate becomes closer to 2%:

This result shows the natural log of the GDP in the Eurozone economy, ln⁡(〖GDP〗_(i,t) ) (Footnote 1.) , is significantly negatively correlated with the inflation rate deviating from 2% which is shown as the absolute number of the inflation rate minus 2, |〖Inf〗_(i,t)-2|. The following auxiliary regression shows both the GDP and the inflation are co-integrated each other:

〖 u〗_(i,t) is the residuals from the previous regression. As the lagged residuals 〖 u〗_(i,t-1) is negatively correlated with change in the residuals 〖∆u〗_(i,t), the variables used in the previous regression, ln⁡(〖GDP〗_(i,t) ) and |〖Inf〗_(i,t)-2|, are stable and co-integrated with the EU inflation rate, which means the movement of these variable affects on the other’s. However, the stability test for Greece and Ireland showed a relatively pessimistic result as follows:

Greek inflation on the inflation of the entire Eurozone countries

This analysis suggests that, , not only the percentage of the entire Eurozone inflation's contingency on Greek inflation rate is 47% in average, which is high,(Amended part) but also change Greek inflation is highly contingent to the entire Eurozone (Footnote 2.). Therefore, it is not only Greece suffers more than the other Eurozone countries and but also Greek economy is highly responsible on the entire Eurozone economy. This aspect may suggest both Greece and the entire Eurozone need to cooperate each other very seriously because Greece should not leave the EMU because her business cycle is already tied up with the EMU.

Irish inflation on the inflation of the entire Eurozone countries

On the other hand, Irish inflation rate is neither stable nor co-integrated with the entire Eurozone one. Therefore, Greece seems to suffer from the volatility of the inflation far more than the other Eurozone members so that she needs either the intervention by the European central government or the fiscal restructuration, or both, to calm down her inflation rate. Unlike Greece, Ireland may be benefitted when she leaves the EMU. Irish business cycle is not correlated with the Eurozone economy. But, if Ireland still wants to keep the membership, the Eurozone eventually needs to have a strong fiscal stimulus enough to enable Irish business cycle to harmonise with the entire Eurozone business cycle.

4. German refusal of participating into the Eurobond programme

The concern of Germany on Greece is that Greek catastrophic crisis will be permanent unless Greece tries to reform her fiscal policy fundamentally and cooperates with the EU central governmental policy rather than her own selfish and irrational nationalism. When a person purchases equity, s/he expects its value to be either stable in the long term or predicted to grow significantly. The value of Greek national debt seems to be neither stable in the long term nor predicted to increase its value in the short term. Even if German government is altruistic enough to sustain Greek public finance by purchasing Greek debt in order to rescue the entire Eurozone, there is a risk for Germany to be drawn into the recession or even to be bankrupt.
The Eurobond programme suggests the Eurozone countries to share both the risk and the benefit of issuing the government debts among the entire Eurozone countries rather than burdening the responsibility on each individual country for incurring the government debt. For example, as shown in the graph below, when Germany experiences the economic growth relatively higher than any other nations whilst France falls into the recession, it needs to tune the aggregate demand of both nations.

As there is no national monetary policy available for both France and Germany, one of the optimum solutions would be increasing the tax revenue of Germany to transfer it to subsidise France. The econometric analysis shown in the previous chapter indicates that French and German economies are highly contingent to each other so that French downturn has to be diverted by German contribution to save Germany herself. This is the idea of sharing the risk and benefit of the national debt and its usage under the collective responsibility among the countries.
Nonetheless, this mechanism may work efficiently and effectively because French fiscal policy does not have a problem like Greek. France and Germany have much more similar labour market situation than Greece. In addition, France and Germany are geographically closer each other than Greece. So, the labour mobility is much more flexible between France and Germany than between Greece and them. Furthermore, France and Germany balance their budget without relying on the excess money supply unlike Greece. If this case scenario were Greek instead of France, German tax revenue transfer to subsidise Greece is ineffective and inefficient.
The intervention from the European central government into Greek fiscal policy under the strict guideline of the central government is also emerged. Greece is still resisting against this intervention due to the sentimental irrational populist nationalism. The European central government regards that, in order to make this money transfer to Greece more effective and efficient, Greek fiscal reform lead by the further privatisation of the entire Greek economy are inevitably required. Greek labour market is rigid because of Greek economy’s reliance on the huge public sector, which disrupts the flexibility of the labour mobility. On the top of the inflexible labour mobility, Greek public sectors are not rational enough to balance their budget. They are not used to the market competition and the thread of bankruptcy because they are always protected by the nation unlike the private sectors. By contrast, the private sectors are much more used to balancing their budget under the market competition. As long as Greek public sectors struggle to rationalise their budget to be balanced by their own effort, the enforced privatisation seems to be only the antidote of the fiscal imbalance.
All in all, the responsibility of Greek fiscal policy should be burdened more on European central government to discourage Greek irrational populist nationalism which is notoriously uncooperative to solve this currently ongoing problem for both Greece herself and the entire Eurozone economy. In order to discourage this pathetic nationalism, the privatisation to minimise Greek national government authority can be a key solution before substituting the power of Greek nationalism with the European economic cooperation.

5. The ECB’s point of view and warning from Mr. Trichet

Focusing on the ECB’s point of view on the current Eurozone financial havoc, the ECB executives are suffering from the dilemma between putting priority on saving the Eurozone economy and focusing on calming the inflation by suggesting the fiscal policy of all Eurozone countries to be tightened. In particular, Mr. Trichet, the governor of the ECB, always rejects the optimism on the Eurobond programme without fundamentally reconstructing the fiscal structure in the entire Eurozone. Mr. Trichet has been always suspicious about the stability of the Eurozone economy since the ECB was established. His suspicion is related to the fiscal problem mentioned in the previous chapter.
The ECB has been purchasing a large volume of the national debt of the Eurozone countries by its quantitative easing. In order to keep the value of these bonds to invest to rescue these governments, the ECB has. The ECB cannot survive without an economic activity of these nations so that the ECB needs to save the national governments of the Eurozone. Otherwise, the value of Euro becomes zero so that the ECB itself disappears. However, the expected result still cannot be seen, and the aggregate government bonds incurred has never stopped expanding. This mechanism still enables the Euro exist, but it depreciates the value of Euro further. This phenomenon causes the inflation to hike up, and then the nominal interest rate eventually needs to rise. Overall, rescuing the Eurozone countries damages the private sectors and individual citizens by a high interest rate, and it creates further government deficit which requires the further ECB’s quantitative easing, which again induces a further inflation. Mr. Trichet has already warned this spiral would occur and urged to divert from it since the beginning of the Eurozone crisis (Footnote 3.). Thus, he rejects all the optimism of perpetuating this situation.
The ECB also struggles with negotiating with the private sectors. Although the previous chapter stated the positive aspect of the private sectors in terms of the fiscal policy, the private sectors cause problem in the monetary policy set by the ECB (Footnote 4.). The private sectors are willing to raise their profit and the wage for their executives, and detest the high interest rate. These characteristics of the private sectors perpetuate the inflation which discourages an economic growth of both countries and private sectors themselves in the long term. Generally speaking, the private sectors are uncooperative to the European economic stabilisation. Although the stabilised European economy which the ECB expects to establish benefits to the private sectors in the long term, these private sectors are less interested in it than the ECB.
This aspect infers a danger for European economy which is now also fund by the private sectors. This could be the reason why Mr. Trichet is modest about the private sector contribution to rescuing the Eurozone national economies .

6. Conclusion
In conclusion, there is no optimistic prospect on this current Eurozone economic situation. In order to solve these structural instabilities, the Eurozone may need a fundamental radical revolutionary act on altering both economic and political entire structure. But, they cannot stop the European economic integration because the almost all Eurozone economies are highly correlated with each other as proven by the econometric analysis. It seriously needs an IMF of Europe, which the ECB is trying to act like. The ECB should have a much stronger authority to instruct the fiscal policy of national governments in the Eurozone as same as the IMF does to the national governments in the globe. In addition, if the priority is saving the European economy, the heavy reliance on the private sectors contribution is very risky. Hence, the ECB policy based on Trichetian Monetarism, which is tough against the irrational egos of both the national government fiscal policy and the private sectors’ short-termism, seems to be only the reliable tool, and the economic agents had better listen to it.

My Additional Comment added on 4th of August 2011:

Well, as I mentioned in my essay, it depends on the hamonisation of the business cycles in these candidate nations (I referred to the price inflation rate as an indicator of the business cycle). When the business cycle is harmonised (Synchronised), the monetary union becomes necessary or inevitable, such as the Greek and the other Eurozone countries' case. Otherwise, such as Irish case, it should not join the monetary union or it has to have a great intervention to artificially harmonise the cycles.

Some African nations might be benefited because they trade each other often, and their economy is not self-sustainable i.e. needs to be corroborated each other. But, they indeed need to have a common fiscal policy to modernise and tighten the fiscal policy of all these nations.

South American nations should not have the monetary union yet. These individual South American countries are too big by means of the land mass relative to their population density (I.e. The cost of the inter-country trade inside South America is higher than the benefit from it). Furthermore, these countries do not trade each other often compared to the other blocks of countries in this world such as Europe, North America, Africa, and Asia (According to the statistics shown in Economics of Monetary Union (Paul De Grauwe)).

The trade frequency of among Asian nations is the highest of all the international trade made in this world. So, as Lee Kuan Yew, the first Singaporean prime minister, said forming Asian trade community could benefit Asian nations. However, other than economic factors, the political factors exist as the obstacles which disrupt forming this trade community.

Only the person concerning the EMU whom I can truely respect and trust is Mr. Trichet and his ECB. I claim that not only the EMU national fiscal policies but also all the private enterprises in the Eurozone economy should be instructed by the ECB based on Trichetian Monetarism...!

Python Experiment: Macroeconomic Theory: Income Price Inflation Control Simulator in the ADAS model

I have created a macroeconomic policy simulator with Python programming.

This refers to the aggregate demand and supply interaction based on the simplified IS-LM interaction influencing the aggregate demand (AD) and the labour market and the capital cost influencing the short-run aggregate supply (AS). These curves are composed of the two main parameters, the aggregate income level and the price level, as well as the money supply (MS) basing the IS-LM, and the wage index (W) basing the labour market.

My Python codes are as follows:
